Firing yourself from automatable or delegatable business tasks is how you grow
A friend of mine, a brilliant marketing agency owner said of her business task load:
“I need to fire myself from certain tasks as fast as I can”
And I think that it’s the perfect sentiment for owning a business. For instance, what would happen to your business tomorrow if you were suddenly unable to work it for a few weeks?
For the majority of us some things would be fine, but some things would crash and burn. The key is to make sure that your business will survive an event like this.
How can I start firing myself from my business tasks?
To figure out how to do this you can start with all the things you do now. It can be overwhelming to try and capture all of the things we do each day, week, and month in our businesses.
But you should! Once you understand that your time, reach and capacity are not infinite you will recognize why you need to fire yourself from certain things to grow.
So how do I do it?
You can consider the following options:
1. Fire yourself using automation
Do you need to manually manage your email lists? Or can you automate opt ins and capture new leads and customers with software?
If I get hit by the beer truck tomorrow, people can still opt in to receive my (amazing) free guides and will automatically receive a few emails introducing them into the community and asking them to join the Facebook group.
And then they will be added to the newsletter list. See? I don’t have to do anything for that to happen, it’s all set up to happen automatically.
So… Which tasks can you automate?
2. Fire yourself by adding a team member
Sometimes (okay many times!) there are things that need to be done in business that can be done faster, and better, by someone else.
I write all of my blogs, but I have a team that codes the blogs into my website and does the SEO for them.
Why? Because it is tedious and I’m not great at it. Some business owners I know delegate all of their content creation to others. Their time is better spent doing things other than drafting newsletters.
Do you need to answer every email? Do you need to send out EVERY webinar reminder yourself?
There are amazing experts available for you that will absolutely lighten your load and help keep your business tasks running smoothly.
So… Which tasks can you delegate?
3. Fire the task
There are amazing productivity experts that talk about deleting tasks that just aren’t serving you or your business.
It may take a while to find the redundant tasks or the things we do that really don’t return on investment.
I recently realized that I pay for two different software products where one has the same capabilities I pay for in the other. FACEPALM.
Now I’m investigating whether I can fire the tasks in one entire software suite. If I can consolidate, I will save both time AND money every month.
Over the next week why don’t you start to have an awareness of the tasks you can fire yourself from.
Then create a plan to do just that. Automate, delegate, or delete. And if you are ever hit by the beer truck, more of your business will thrive during your time away.
