BEFORE YOU DECIDE
The Field Manual for Durable Decisions Under Pressure
Available July 21, 2026

About the Book
Before You Decide is a field manual for business owners, founders, and leaders who need to think clearly, choose deliberately, and preserve the judgment behind their most consequential decisions.
It’s built on a decision architecture adapted from Department of Defense capability planning and enterprise intelligence systems, translated for Main Street operators who do not have a dedicated strategy staff but still face hard calls about what to commit to, what it will cost to carry, and what happens if the assumptions underneath the decision turn out to be wrong.
The book walks through orientation, de-distortion, judgment reclamation, and boundary conditions — using real case studies, including a twelve-person machine shop’s equipment purchase decision — to make the framework usable, not just theoretical.
The Carry Question:
What does the business have to carry if we say yes?
“Every consequential decision brings something with it: cash requirements, capacity strain, timing pressure, people consequences, customer expectations, operational dependencies, risk, and the leadership reality of who will carry the decision after it’s made.
Before You Decide teaches operators to ask this question before the commitment — not after”
A Body of Work, Not Just a Book
Before You Decide is the first volume in a growing decision-discipline system:
- Before You Decide (Available July 21, 2026) — the doctrine and the field manual
- The Operator’s Manual (Coming September 2026) — the application layer: worksheets, case studies, and implementation tools across real business scenarios
- The Annual Business Companion (Coming November 2026) — a year-specific decision record, built to be used every year. One year of documented decisions gives you clarity. Seven years gives you institutional intelligence.

About the Author
Dawn K. Kennedy’s path to this book runs over a decade. As a military acquisition requirements writer, she led capability-based planning work, including as staff coordinator for a program that became a nano-drone Program of Record, where the central discipline was always the same: understand what a decision requires before you commit to it.
That thinking translating military acquisition for other industries and organizations first appeared in print in 2014, in articles like “Before You Buy: Capturing Requirements for Equipment” and “What’s the Problem? Introducing the Capability Gap,” written for At The Ready Magazine, a publication she ran for first responders and public safety professionals. By 2015, the approach had a name, SAAPS, a Standardized Acquisition Approach, built for departments making high-stakes equipment decisions with public money.
After leaving government work in 2017, Dawn focused on her work as an attorney and running her own consulting practice. In 2013, an earlier consulting business collapsed, leaving her family $76,000 in debt; she and her husband paid it off in 39 months. That experience is where her Breakthrough Number system came from. It is the discipline of knowing exactly what a business must make to survive before anything else gets decided.
In January 2021, Dawn became a business owner once again co-founding Convoy Road Coffee Roasters and has led that organization for the last 5 years.
Before You Decide is where all of it converges, from over eleven years of approaching the same underlying questions, finally written down as a complete doctrine.

Dawn’s father — her final proofreader, reluctant editor, and the reason this book exists in its current form joins her live for the launch. Book talk, Q&A, unfiltered commentary, maybe champagne.

The larger system is coming, but the work starts here: learning how to see the decision before you commit the business to carrying it.
